Good to know about markets in Brittany

Almost every Breton town has its market day, and the cities hold several a week in different neighbourhoods. The stalls are full of local produce: vegetables from the 'golden belt' of market gardens along the north coast, strawberries in spring, galettes and crêpes cooked in front of you, farmhouse cheese and cider, and, in the ports, fish, shellfish and oysters. Farmers' markets, where only those who grow or rear the produce may sell, let you buy direct without going out to the farm.

Markets are mostly held in the morning, and stalls start to empty towards late morning. In summer, many coastal towns hold evening markets, where craftspeople and producers set up in the late afternoon, often with food to eat on the spot and some live music.

Bring your own bags or a basket, and some change for small purchases. Parking gets difficult in town centres on market days, so arriving early, on foot or by bike, makes things easier. To find markets near you, the site's search shows them by date around an address or your current location, on a map and in a list.
