Good to know about fêtes and festivals in Brittany

A village fête, put on by the local festival committee and associations, often combines a boules or palets competition, children's games, a shared meal and a fest-noz or dance. On the coast, maritime festivals bring together traditional sailing boats, sea shanties and harbour crafts. Pardons, religious festivals characteristic of Brittany, pair a procession in honour of a saint with a popular celebration that can last all day. The major festivals, finally, draw visitors from far afield every summer, covering everything from contemporary music and Celtic music to street arts and film.

The season peaks in July and August, but fêtes begin in spring and carry on into autumn with apple and cider festivals. In summer, old-style threshing festivals bring the harvests of the past back to life. Many fêtes run over several days, with a different programme each day.

Check the detailed programme before setting off, as the highlights do not all fall on the same day. For the big festivals, tickets can sell out well in advance, and shuttle buses or car sharing spare you the parking problems. Village fêtes are often free. To find a fête near you, the site's search shows upcoming dates around an address or your current location, on a map and in a list.
