Good to know about walks and hikes in Brittany

The GR 34 long-distance footpath runs along most of the Breton coast. Much of it follows the old customs officers' path, laid out to keep watch over the shore, and it offers views over cliffs, headlands and coves. Inland, the towpaths of the Nantes–Brest canal make for easy, level walking, while the heather moors of the Monts d'Arrée and the forest of Paimpont, linked to the Arthurian legend of Brocéliande, attract walkers looking for wilder country.

Associations, tourist offices and nature guides lead walks all year round: guided strolls on local heritage or wild flowers, walks at dusk, and longer routes lasting several hours for the fitter walker. Charity walks raising money for a cause are also common.

Even in fine weather, pack a waterproof: the weather changes quickly on the coast. Good footwear is essential on the coastal path, which is often narrow and sometimes slippery. If your route crosses the foreshore or an island reachable only at low tide, check the tide times before setting off. To find a guided walk near you, the site's search shows upcoming outings around an address or your current location, on a map and in a list.
