Good to know about exhibitions in Brittany

Brittany has long ties with painting: in the late nineteenth century Paul Gauguin and other artists settled in Pont-Aven, drawn by the landscapes and rural life of the region. That legacy lives on in the fine art museums of the larger towns, alongside museums devoted to the sea, photography or folk art, and centres for contemporary art. Galleries, plentiful in the ports and old market towns, show painters, photographers and sculptors.

In summer, many country chapels host contemporary art exhibitions, a chance to see religious heritage that is often locked the rest of the year alongside the work of living artists. Exhibitions usually run for several weeks, sometimes several months, so there is time to pick your moment.

Opening hours often differ between high and low season, and many venues close one day a week, so check before you set off. Galleries and many temporary exhibitions are free to enter, while museums usually charge. To find an exhibition near you, the site's search shows them around an address or your current location, on a map and in a list.
