Good to know about going out in Morlaix

Morlaix is built where two rivers meet, at the point the estuary stops being navigable. The stone viaduct striding across the town from one slope to the other is its best-known outline; beneath it, the old town lines up timber-framed houses and alleys climbing towards the heights. The marina, on the axis of the centre, connects the town to the bay, on the border between the Léon and the Trégor.

A town of trade and industry — the tobacco factory was long its largest employer — Morlaix has turned part of that heritage to cultural use. The halls run from September through to spring, with concerts, theatre and exhibitions, while summer brings events back to the quays, the squares and the bay. On market days the centre fills with the whole hinterland, from the Léon as much as the Trégor.

In practice: the town slopes almost everywhere, and you cross a good many steps between the upper and lower levels — decent shoes and a little breath both help. Parking is easier near the harbour than in the centre, and the station, perched on the valley side at the height of the viaduct, is reached by a climb.
