Good to know about going out in Saint-Brieuc

Saint-Brieuc has the peculiarity of being a coastal town that does not quite touch the coast: the centre, gathered around a cathedral built like a fortress, sits on a plateau that two deep valleys separate from the districts next to it. You have to go down one of them to reach the port of Légué, at the mouth of the Gouët, a trading port of long standing and today shared between commerce, pleasure boats and fishing.

The bay of Saint-Brieuc has one of the greatest tidal ranges in Europe: the sea withdraws for kilometres, uncovering a foreshore protected as a nature reserve and much used by migrating birds. It is also a scallop bay, fished in the cold season, on which several neighbouring ports depend. That double character shows in what is on: an indoor season from autumn to spring, open-air events and maritime gatherings once the weather turns.

In practice: the town is hilly and the slopes are quickly felt on foot; the port and the beaches are reached by car or bus. The station, on the Rennes to Brest line, puts the town within reach by train. Before walking out on the foreshore, check when the tide turns — it comes back quickly and a long way.
