Good to know about going out in Quimperlé

At Quimperlé two rivers join to form the Laïta, which then runs down to the sea. Around that meeting point, the lower town was built level with the water, around an abbey church built on a circular plan, with bridges, quays and old houses. The upper town, on the hillside, is arranged around another church and gives a view over the whole. You pass from one to the other by steeply sloping streets and steps.

The town serves as a centre for the whole Quimperlé country, on the border between Cornouaille and the Morbihan, and its calendar follows both: concerts, theatre and exhibitions take over the halls from September through to spring, while summer carries the programme down to the riverbanks, the squares and the coastal communes nearby, only some fifteen kilometres away. On market days the centre fills with the villages around.

In practice: the lower town is explored on foot, but the climb to the upper town is a steep one. The rivers, swollen by rain, have always spilled into the lower streets: after heavy rainfall it is worth checking access before setting out. The forest of Carnoët, along the Laïta, offers fine walks a short way from the centre.
