Good to know about going out in Plougastel-Daoulas

Plougastel-Daoulas occupies a peninsula between the Élorn and the river of Daoulas, entirely turned towards the roadstead of Brest. Its deeply indented coast alternates inlets, shingle shores and small slipways, and the coastal path goes round it with views over the roadstead and the Crozon peninsula. In the middle of the village, in front of the church, a monumental calvary carved in the seventeenth century recalls the tradition of the parish closes. The commune is also known for its strawberry, grown here since the eighteenth century and long its emblem.

Being so close to Brest changes everything: residents make use of what the city next door puts on, while Plougastel keeps a dense network of associations, neighbourhood fêtes and an indoor season from autumn to spring. In summer events move closer to the shore and the slipways. In practice, two bridges cross the Élorn and put the village minutes from Brest, with regular buses; on the peninsula itself the coastal lanes are narrow and the car parks by the shore fill quickly.
