Good to know about going out in Lannion

Lannion settled where the Léguer, still tidal at this point, stops being navigable. The centre keeps its timber-framed houses around the squares, and a long stone staircase climbs to the church of Brélévenez, with a view over the valley from the top. The town has a second, more recent life: since the nineteen-sixties it has housed laboratories, companies and courses in telecommunications, which gives it a student population and a scientific activity unusual for a town of its size.

The calendar reflects that: the halls, the colleges and the laboratories fill the programme from September onwards, with concerts, theatre, talks and student events right through to spring, while summer turns attention to the coast close by, its beaches and its maritime festivities. Breton associations across the Trégor keep traditional music and dance going all year.

In practice: the Pink Granite Coast is about a quarter of an hour away by road, which makes Lannion a convenient base for evenings and days out by the water. The centre is walkable, parking is easier away from the narrow streets of the old town, and the level of the Léguer changes markedly with the tide.
