Good to know about going out in Dinan

Dinan is a town of heights: the old town, ringed by walls that are almost complete, stands tens of metres above the valley of the Rance. Below, the port and its old bridge mark the point where the maritime Rance gives way to the canalised river; between the two, the rue du Jerzual and its continuation drop down the slope in cobbles, lined with craft workshops. A viaduct crosses the valley in a single span above the port.

Heritage sets the tone of the programme: guided visits, exhibitions, shows and historical events take up much of the warmer months, when the town is busy. Autumn and winter bring back the rhythm of halls and associations, with concerts, theatre and talks, and the squares of the centre go on holding the market all year.

In practice: the walk down to the port is short but very steep, and the way back up has to be earned — wear decent shoes, or go there and back by road. The historic centre is covered on foot, parking is easier on the edge of town, and the Rance, canalised at the port itself, only meets the tide again a few kilometres downstream.
